"Barbara, Mother [Reta] told us several times about how proud her father was when as a child at school, when the teacher asked each child to tell his full name, he rattled off "William Wesley Whiteside Wilks!" and some of the other kids laughed at his long name. It was a photo I [Doris] took of Mary's mother's tombstone in IL that convinced him -- Sarah, Sally or Salome Pfeiffer (Young) from Switzerland.
"There used to be a Whiteside family at Dublin they visited, but I didn't realize at the time they were kinfolks."

Have not been able to locate any documents, letters, census, or anything that uses the name Whiteside. His draft card, birth certificate (written many years later), marriage license did not use Whiteside. - Barbara Corner

Papa and Grandmother Wilks
Papa and Grandmother Wilks
Note: This picture is one of my [Barbara D. McLean Corner] favorite pictures of Papa (William Wesley Wilks) and Grandmother (Erie Catharine Wilks). It had the date of 1925 on the back of the picture and if I am not mistaken it was taken beside their half-dugout home.

Note: This 1" x 1 1/8" photograph was among the papers and pictures of Myrl Jean Wilks McLean when she broke up housekeeping in Houston. On the reverse of the photograph Erie, wife of Willie, had written "W. W. Wilks, Age 20." It is now in the possession of Myrl's daughter, Barbara D. McLean Corner in McKinney, Texas.
