Note

Progress, Dublin, Erath County, Texas, USA. Published sometime in June 1944
"Two Dublin Boys In Famous 71st Division
"Cpl. Kirby K. Wilks, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wilks, rout four, Dublin, and Private Paul Howell, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Howell, route four, Dublin, are both with the 81st [71st] Division, which, under the command of Maj. Gen. Robert I. Spragins, has been schooled and hardened in mountain warfare. This division, originally designed to operate in close and difficult terrain, was activated last July at Camp Carson, Colorado. Much of the intensive training of the division has been under exactly circumstances, where their only transportation was by mules.
"General Spragins, a 1913 graduate of West Point, and a seasonal veteran of the 1914 Mexico expedition World War I, Army of Occupation in Germany, Pearl Harbor, and Guadalcanal, where he won the DSM, Silver Star, and the Purple Heart, attempts to make this 71st the best division of the Army by giving them the severest training and most gruelling [sic] maneuvers.
"The division, recently transferred in Fort Benning, Georgia, has forsaken its former mode of travel—mules—and will soon become entirely motorized, according to news furnished the Progress by Paul Howell, of the Mechanical division, and Kirby Wilks of the Med Attachment."

Dear Myrl,
I hope you are doing very well. All of you are fine I trust. Perhaps by this time Barbara and Sheron are back with you. I’m sure it is lonely there without them. I am all right. I got to attend church services today by the chaplain held in the Protestant church here in this town. Its among the first times for a long while.
Back in France at first we had plenty of food but the same thing. It was “A” rations and cooked hot. When we hit combat at first it was just as good but soon got lousy. When we crossed the rhine it went blanie. We were lucky to get type “C” rations then. Part time we lived in barnes & parttime in tents not Paramadyl [pyramidal] or wall, but our own little pup tents, so named because they aren’t big enough to cuss full grown dog in. We moved every day of combat except about six or seven through it all, & sometimes we moved as high as three & four times from town to town. Some only four or five miles, others were one & two hundred mile moves. Things look pretty favorable for this Div. to be sent to the S.W.P. In fact its supposed to be definite, but know whether through the states or through direct by canal.
Myrl its pretty disgusting over here. In fact I’m not taking things so well. I was never so disgusted, so weary & disheartened in my life. I’m lonesome to see Mother & Papa and all of you & Lavern & all my friends if I have any left. I’m lonely & anxious for my horse & saddle & cold Texas wind burning my face & chest when he opens in a run. I guess it mostly boils down to worrying about Mother & Papa, how they are & if they will still be waiting for me & if I can give them a descent home when this is all over. Then too if a girl can see that a boy owes his parents something & must care for them. I have eight head of cows, Mother two & two horses & Papa his mule. That’s a start & I’m certainly proud of them. Seven are breeding age.
Oh, well, nothing but the worst can come anyway. I must quit. Take care of yourselfes. Love, Your brother, K. "
