The north cemetery is Littleville, then Oakwood, then New IOOF. Oakwood Cemetery, the middle one, has a famous grave of Ollie L Roberts aka Billy the Kid seen easily from the road in the first row. Just south of his grave there is an interior cemetery road that runs east and west. That road is the southern boundary of Oakwood and the northern boundary of New IOOF. The Hamilton Herald-News ¶ June 8, 2005 ¶ Mrs. Newsom ¶ Mary Ruth (Stribling) (Pruitt) Newsom, 89, died June 4, 2005 at Hamilton. Funeral services were June 7 in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. George Tolbert and Dick Stovall officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. ¶ Mrs. Newsom was born in Hamilton County on Dec. 25, 1915, to Eugene Perry "Pet" Stribling and Edith Estella "Stella" (Carter) (Stribling) Holloway. ¶ She attended school at Blue Ridge and graduated from Hamilton High School before attending John Tarleton Junior College. Mrs. Newsom taught for one year in the Lund Valley School. ¶ She was married to Jesse Earl Pruitt on May 27, 1937. He preceded her in death with his passing on July 14, 1991. ¶ On October 30, 1999, Mary Ruth was married to Elmo Wilber Newsom--following one week of courtship. Of course, they had known each other for decades and both had lived in the Blue Ridge community. ¶ In addition to teaching, Mrs. Newsom worked many years as a bookkeeper for Louise Bingham and Alton Bullard; she was also director of nurses for Hurley Nursing which is now Forest Oaks. ¶ She was a faithful member of the Blue Ridge Home Demonstration Club as long as it existed. Additionally, she was one of the original volunteers at United Care. ¶ Mrs. Newsom had a large collection of dolls and was the "doll doctor" for the ailing dolls of young friends and relatives. She held membership in the Ann Whitney Chapter of DAR through her great-great-great-grandfather, James Clayton Stribling. She was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church before she joined the Reagan Street Church of Christ, now known as Park Heights Church of Christ. ¶ She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband and her son, Jesse Eugene Pruitt. ¶ Survivors include her husband, Elmo Wilber Newsom; a grandson, Patrick Eugene Pruitt; a granddaughter Cassandra Dianne "Cassie" Pruitt; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Pruitt; an ex-daughter-in-law, Ann Pruitt; a great-grandson, Jesse Taylor Pruitt, a great-granddaughter, Peyton McKinna Pruitt; and step-daughters, Lou Chumney and Sue Kopp as well as her extended family of ten step- grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Grand Mary. ¶ Riley Funeral Home Citation details: Memorial# 42663182.
